Singapore, October 16th, 2011 (9:00am local time) -- In residence at The Fullerton Hotel
This morning we watched on CNNI the global protests in support of the "Occupy Wall Street" movement in the USA. Admittedly, the American political/economic elite does remind you of Louie and Marie before the chop, but that is not my Singapore tale.
After watching the Romans play Huns on TV, we went down to breakfast at the Straits Club and we were given The Sunday Times, a Singapore Sunday paper, rather than the IHT which we usually read over coffee. The lower, front-page photo lead is entitled "What's Missing in This Picture?" (www.straitstimes.com) It is the site where the local Occupy Wall Street supporters were to hold their demonstration (Raffles Place INT Station), and only a handful of protesters showed.
Here's how J&E get involved. At about the time the protest was to take place, we were casually strolling through the Raffles Place INT Station looking for a SingTel Office in a co-located shopping mall. This was to help Jerry solve a digital data roaming problem with his Android phone (How to turn digital roaming OFF!). If there was a protest, we never saw any sign of it (No pun intended!). There were no protesters or protest signs, nor were there any police barriers or even police. You just don't see a police presence on the streets of Singapore. So, again J&E prove that ignorance is bliss or something like that.
